Why Our Compost is Hot

At Restoration Soils, we don’t just compost — we compost with purpose. As Northern Arizona’s only industrial compost facility and food scrap collection service, we use a method that goes far beyond your backyard bin: thermophilic composting.

What is Thermophilic Composting?

"Thermophilic" means heat-loving — and in this case, we're talking about microorganisms that thrive at high temperatures (131–160°F). In our carefully managed piles, these microbes do the heavy lifting, breaking down food scraps and organic matter fast and thoroughly.

This heat isn’t just a byproduct — it’s the secret weapon.

How it can be more effective than backyard composting

Backyard composting is a great step — but it has limits:

 Why Compost At All?

Whether it’s from your home, restaurant, or community, organic waste makes up over 30% of what we throw away — and much of it ends up in landfills, where it creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

But when we compost it?

  • It feeds the soil, not the landfill.

  • It retains moisture in gardens and landscapes.

  • It reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers.

  • It restores life to the land — which is what we’re all about.

Be Part of the Solution

By composting with Restoration Soils, you’re doing more than keeping scraps out of the trash. You’re creating a local, closed-loop system that turns waste into nutrient-rich soil for Flagstaff and beyond.

Whether you're dropping off your scraps or partnering with us for pickup, you’re helping build healthier soil, stronger gardens, and a more sustainable community.

Let’s Keep It Hot — and Keep It Local.
